Microsoft Purview

Microsoft Purview is a unified data governance, compliance, and risk management platform that helps organizations understand, govern, and protect their data across Microsoft 365, on-premises systems, and multi-cloud environments. By consolidating capabilities that were previously spread across separate products, Purview provides a single platform for information protection, data loss prevention, compliance management, and insider risk mitigation.

Data Loss Prevention (DLP) policies monitor and protect sensitive information across Exchange, SharePoint, OneDrive, Teams, and endpoint devices. Policies detect sensitive data types—credit card numbers, social security numbers, health records, or custom patterns—and automatically enforce protective actions such as blocking sharing, encrypting content, or notifying users and administrators. Sensitivity labels extend this protection by classifying and encrypting documents and emails based on their content or manual user classification, with labels persisting as files move across locations.

Insider Risk Management uses behavioral signals from Microsoft 365 services and optionally from endpoints and HR systems to identify potentially risky user activities such as unusual data exfiltration patterns, policy violations, or pre-departure data hoarding. It balances detection with user privacy through pseudonymization and role-based access controls that restrict who can view activity details.

eDiscovery Premium streamlines legal and compliance workflows by providing advanced search, review, and analytics capabilities for identifying relevant content across Microsoft 365, with features such as predictive coding, near-duplicate detection, and conversation threading that reduce review time and cost. Compliance Manager continuously assesses the organization's compliance posture against more than 300 regulatory frameworks—including GDPR, HIPAA, SOC 2, and CMMC—providing improvement actions, documentation templates, and an aggregated compliance score that tracks progress over time.
